Scholarship Fund

Robert L. Powers, M.Div., M.A., Adler Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus, was one of our founders and a pioneer in the field of Adlerian psychology.  He was among the early instructors at the University, with Rudolf Dreikurs, Bernard Shulman, Harold Mosak, and Bina Rosenberg.  He played an important role in the development of our early courses, as well as the establishment of certification in Adlerian theory and methods.

Through the years, Rev. Powers served as a teacher and mentor to hundreds of practitioners at the University. A master clinician and teacher, he was known for an extensive body of work, including collaborations with his wife, Adler alumnus and Professor Emerita Jane Griffith. Together, they co-authored three texts in Adlerian Psychology and numerous professional articles, and lectured extensively in the United States, Canada, and abroad until Powers’ passing in April 2013.

Dr. Dittmer graduated in 1982 with a M.A. in Counseling Psychology and a Certificate in Psychotherapy. He recalls fondly his days at what was then the Alfred Adler Institute, and his time studying under Powers, Mosak and Shulman, among others. Dr. Dittmer’s significant contribution to this scholarship fund allowed the University to permanently endow the scholarship, ensuring its longevity that honors the Powers, Griffith, and Dittmer legacies.

The scholarship celebrates the work of Powers, Griffith, and Dittmer with students, professionals, and the public to create a community of dedicated and connected Adlerian practitioners. It provides awards to students based on financial need, academic merit, and a commitment to individual and community well-being.
