There are two important thoughts that Dr. Albert Schweitzer once said that drive my attitude and behavior: “My life is my argument” and “Example is not the main thing influencing others, it’s the only thing”. These tenets are acutely in my awareness in my role as an academician, clinician, and administrator. It is a code of belief and behavior that I strive to live by, and what determines my course in life and decisions I make on a daily basis. It is also the driving force behind all of the efforts of the experiential learning and clinical services division of Academic Affairs.
Our goal is to ensure that students have meaningful training opportunities to robustly develop the application of their theoretical and applied knowledge from the classroom room. Adler University students have unique training that combines social justice techniques with clinical skills. As our students learn to treat the individual or family’s mental health, they also learn to empower communities to create social change on those factors impacting health on a broader scale. I believe social justice work is a journey you participate in alongside a community, driven by the community.
